Online Session Preparation Guide

1. Setting Up Your Environment

Finding a Private Space

To ensure you can focus fully, aim for a space free from interruptions:

  • A private room with a closed door.

  • If sharing a home: Establish clear privacy agreements with housemates, family, partners, or support workers during your session time.

    • Agreement ideas: Having others stay in their own rooms, or using earphones if they are in shared spaces.

  • If you are a primary caregiver: Arrange for a trusted friend, partner, family member, or support worker to supervise during the 60-minute session.

Preparing a Welcoming Space

Reflect on these questions to tailor your environment to your comfort and needs:

Basic & Comfort Needs

‘What do I need nearby to stay comfortable?’

Examples

  • Water

  • Tissues

  • Fidget toys or comfort objects (pillows, blankets, soft toys)

  • Floor matting or cushioning

Seating & Movement

‘Do I have comfortable sitting and lying-down options?’

‘Do I have space to move freely if the session becomes active?’

Movement Check

  • Reach your arms out in all directions to make sure you won't bump into furniture or sharp objects.

  • Unless limited by the space, an injury, fatigue/exhaustion, or health condition, I recommend practicing outside of bed—on a chair or soft cushioning/mat on the floor.

Temperature Control

‘How can I stay at a comfortable temperature?’

Examples

  • Layered, weather-appropriate clothing

  • Access to an open window

  • Electric or handheld fan

  • Water spray bottle or cool towel

  • Hot water bottle or hand/foot warmers

Lighting & Screen Positioning

‘What light helps me feel present?’ (Bright white, warm yellow, soft lighting, or natural light?)

Glaring check

  • Check where light hits your screen so you can avoid glare during the call.

Anchor Points

‘Are there familiar or comforting objects nearby to keep me grounded and create a container around the session space?’

Examples

  • A favorite piece of art

  • your journal

  • meaningful mementos (a pebble from a trip, shells, pressed or freshly picked flowers)

Remember: We move at your pace and work entirely with the environment you have available. We will discuss what works best for you during our Orientation Session.

2. Equipment Checklist

  • Device: Ideally a laptop or tablet (a screen larger than a phone helps you clearly see demonstrations).

  • Camera: Using your webcam is encouraged so we can see each other, though you retain full choice over when to turn it on or off.

  • Earphones (Optional): Helps maintain privacy and improves focus by reducing household noise.

  • External Speaker (Optional): Useful if your device’s built-in speaker is quiet (provided privacy allows).

3. Technical Requirements

  • Charging/Power: Make sure you device is plugged in or fully charged; video calls drain batteries quickly.

  • Internet Connection: Choose a space where you have good Wi-Fi connection.

  • Internet Browser: You need access to any standard web browser.

  • Notifications: Please put your phone on Airplane mode and turn off apps on your laptop, so that you are not disturbed during the session. If you are awaiting an important call, do let me know at the beginning of the session so we can account for that in the session journey.

  • Meeting Link: Your meeting link will always be sent in the Reminder email, 30 minutes prior to session time.

  • Back-up Plan: If our connection drops or the video call stops working, we will try connecting a couple of times more to see if it was a temporary connection issue. If the connection still does not work, I will send you an email with other options: usually a different meeting link (Jitsi platform) OR my phone number for us to have a phone conversation instead.

4. The Body

  • Basic Needs: consider a 5-10min transition break (i.e. rest, food, water, toilet) before we begin the session so you don’t feel rushed during session.

  • Clothing: anything you feel comfortable and you can easily move or be in.

  • Buffer Time: consider allowing yourself at least 20-30 minutes of integration time after the session before starting another task/activity.
